In a discovery that has astronomers scratching their heads with theories, a massive ‘S’-like shape has been recently discovered on the Moon’s surface.
Captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) during a routine scan on March 25, the approximately 10-kilometre-wide formation in the Mare Serenitatis region, which viewed from a particular angle, bears a striking resemblance to part of the logo of Staebler Insurance, an Ontario insurance broker. As the news broke, speculation ranged from natural phenomena to improved camera technology picking up finer details.
The discovery came as a shock to the astronomer who first noticed the anomaly while reviewing the LRO images: “I thought it was a processing error,” they stated. “But when we enhanced the resolution, there it was a clear, flowing ‘S’ carved into the lunar soil.”
The symbol curves and slightly flourishes at the ends have only fueled the intrigue, with many pointing out its similarity to the branding of Staebler Insurance, a Kitchener, Ontario-based brokerage celebrating over 150 years in business.
Naturally, the internet has had a field day. Posts on social media include “Who just sold insurance to the Moon?” and “Looks like Staebler’s really out here claiming the lunar market!”
Staebler Insurance Embracing the Out of this World Attention
Staebler Insurance has leaned into the buzz with good humour.
In a statement released yesterday, Staebler President Joanna Mendonca said. “We’ve been insuring homes and businesses for over 150 years, but we never imagined our logo would end up on the Moon! We’re flattered by this cosmic shoutout and happy to offer a Group Rate Insurance discount to any lunar residents who might need coverage.”
Astronomers noted that “the Moon’s surface is shaped by millions of impacts and volcanic activity. It’s possible that this could be a natural formation. Perhaps a collapsed lava tube or an oddly angled meteor strike that is enhanced by shadows.”
As we marvel at this lunar oddity today, it’s hard not to wonder if the Moon’s pulling a fast one on us. Whether a fluke, a hoax, or something truly out of this world, the Staebler-esque ‘S’ has given us a cosmic puzzle to ponder.
